Level 10 Construction and Jay Paul Company hosted teams from all six Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) stations at the new Moffett Towers II Building 1 for high-rise firefighting exercises. Composed of integrated fire, police and emergency services personnel, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety is the largest department of its kind in the country. Lt. Emmett Larkin of Sunnyvale Fire Station 2 shared how DPS teams are preparing for emergencies as the city’s landscape changes.

“Until about 10 years ago, the City of Sunnyvale had no buildings over two stories, maybe three stories max. Obviously, the city has taken off now, and we have Juniper Networks, Google, Yahoo, Amazon and LinkedIn. Apple has over 150 buildings in our city. With multiple high-rises now in Sunnyvale, we have had to change our tactics,” he said. “It’s a completely different mindset fighting fire in a high-rise commercial building as opposed to a two-story residential structure.”

Larkin considers trainings in new developments like Moffett Towers II an important part of the team’s disaster preparedness. “We’re very fortunate here in Sunnyvale in that much of the commercial development in the city has been built by Level 10 and the Jay Paul Company, so all of the buildings out in this corner are all structurally pretty much identical,” he continued. “Working in an actual building of this type is huge for us. It gives us an opportunity to deploy our persons, take a look inside, and see what works, what doesn’t work, what we need to change, and how we need to group our systems.”

Sr. Superintendent Bryan Morrissey said Level 10 and Jay Paul Company were happy to accommodate the Department in this important training drill. “MT2-B1 is a great place for the Sunnyvale FD to use as a training platform for their team to prepare for real-life situations. Firefighters are essential to the safety and security of our community. We owe it these men and women to provide them with better training opportunities, so they can do their jobs more effectively and safely. Anytime we get the opportunity to help the firefighters, we will.”
