The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) Expansion increases the Museum to approximately 105,000 SF total and provides a new 41 space parking garage.
Currently, MCASD has approximately 55,400 SF in total area including 11,000 SF of gallery space and a 9,500 SF auditorium. The primary goal of the expansion is to maximize gallery space. The proposed design delivers 46,000 SF of gallery space which includes the renovation and repurpose of the existing auditorium into a two-level gallery with 20-foot-high ceilings and a new skylight on the upper level.
The design includes a newly located and redefined main entry and bookstore along Prospect Street. An existing parking lot to the north will be converted into a new outdoor terrace with expansive coastal views. A new art loading dock has been incorporated into the parking garage to the South under the newly proposed gallery spaces.
